    Oh Crap!

I just realized that I will need my social security card for this process. How long does it take to get a social security card? ...I have no idea where my *&#%#*!*@* card is!

If it's not one thing, it's lotsa things.

Yeah, I'm looking for mine too. I know I saw it within the year and in this house. It helps. I was born abroad (another country) and need all sorts of crazy paperwork to get a new one.

Yikes, that sucks. I haven't seen mine in years. Haven't needed it in years. One more thing to do...I don't need one more thing to do!

Okay, I'll stop stressing for now...well, I'll try.

Epiphany, it's not as bad as you think. Basically, you go down to the Social Security Administration office in your area and provide them with ID, etc. They issue you a signed paper that states you have applied for a replacement; this paper is sufficient for most purposes until your new card arrives (in 2003, I had to go through this, and the new card arrived in 3 days, wow!). The biggest ***** is the waiting in line at the SSA office: if you are anywhere near a rural area, go to the office that is most rurally located. Seriously. They tend to be much faster because there are not as many people (usually) as in the city offices.

See the following link for more info:

P.S. The guy who got called first at my 341 was unable to produce proof of SSN. They want the card, sure, but the trustee was asking him if he had *anything*, even paystubs, with his SSN on it. He didn't, so his 341 got continued, but the moral of this story is that in a pinch I think they'll take whatever you have. If you get that paper from the SSA saying you applied, that would likely be sufficient for the 341. Good luck!!!

Actually, it was after reading your post about the 341 filer without the social that freaked me out.

But shucks, Flad, you always make me feel better. I have plenty of docs with my social on it I (pay stubs, tax returns, etc)...just don't have the card itself. Would prefer to have the card in hand. Don't want to leave anything up to chance if I can avoid it.

I live in a very suburban area but am VERY good at finding the easiest office for such things (think DMV...I avoid the ones in my immediate area at all cost). I appreciate the advice. And I just looked at the link..nice to know I can get three a year. Ha. And it says FREE...really like that. Pretty sure the last one I got (back in the 80's sometime, somewhere, in Santa Barbara) cost me 10.00.

          Thanks again friend,

It took less than a week for my new SS card to arrive. Where my 341 was the SS office is upstairs and someone ahead of us didn't have her card and they sent her up there to get the signed paper that she requested another one.

            Good luck!

              Wow, Carlysmom, that's efficient!!!

Glad I could help, Ep. Another thing you can do in a pinch (preferably through your attorney, but directly if you're pro se) is call your trustee's office and explain that you do not currently have a SS card but can provide all manner of other docs, and ask if the trustee will take a secondary document. The signed paper is obviously from the SSA (and they do verify your ID before they give it to you) but when this guy got his 341 continued, the trustee rattled off a short list of other docs he would take, so I know it can be done, but it's up to trustee discretion.

(Keep in mind that my trustee requests a gazillion docs be mailed to him prior to the 341, so he's already seen our SSN many times by the time we get there. If your trustee didn't require a lot up front, and therefore hasn't already seen 20 pieces of paper with your SSN on it, he might not be so willing to accept secondary documentation. Again, trustee discretion....)

              Good luck!!!

Hey, you're not going to believe this, I didn't, but yesterday, when looking for something else, I found my original social security card from when I was a little girl that my mother sent me at some point. It's still attached to the paperwork. I hope that it's acceptable, it looks dated...probably a collector's item! I don't even remember her sending me that but it was a VERY cool find!
