    Car registration question

This might not be the place to put this, but I thought someone might know.

We're including a Saab that is completely dead (needs a new engine) in our BK in March. So it's just sitting in our driveway. I know we have to keep insurance on it because we have a loan on it; but does anyone know if we can take the plates off? We bought a replacement for it and would much rather transfer the plates since we just registered it in Nov before it died and we won't be driving it anyways. It's just waiting for the bank to come take it in March or whenever.

anyone know the rules on this?

Check your city regulations. For example my city considers any unlicences vehicle (even on your own property) that can be seen from the street as trash if it doesn't have current registration on it. Since we have a city ordinance about trash in yards (anywhere visible from the street) we will be fined if an unregistered vehicle sits in our driveway, side of house, or yard.

If I am understanding your question correctly you are asking if you can take the plates from the dead vehicle and use them on the new vehicle because the registrations is current on the dead car? If that is what you meant then, no, that is illegal to transfer plates from one vehicle to the other without going through DMV.

Oh, I would def go thru the DMV!!! I meant to legally transfer them, not just physically move them.
