    Exotic breed animals?

We have a Maine Coon Cat we got January of this year. We paid $650 for him along with getting shots and neutered. Of course he is now our beloved family pet, but do trustees ask about animals like this (purebreds that are kind of extravagant in their cost to buy?) I would pretty much just say we have a couple of house cats if the topic came up, but just wanted to be prepared. I'm assuming a trustee wouldn't ask you to sell the family pet to recoup money (which I wouldn't do, it would break my son's heart - and we'd be upset too).

    Thanks for any advice.

Unlikely you will have a problem.

Although I don't believe there is any specific exemption for a family pet, it seems rather 'cruel & unusual' to ask you to sell it. Also, I'm not sure family pets are considered assets.

If you had several and were breeding them for sale and profit, that may be a different story.

PLEASE NOTE: I am not a lawyer. Bankruptcy may or may not be a best scenario for you. It depends on your situation. You may assume my advice is totally useless. Talk to an experienced bankruptcy attorney (or three) in your jurisdiction for legal advice.

I asked a BK atty about pets before we filed, I was so scared I would lose my pets, especially my youngest cat because I hand-raised him from the day he was born, he is almost like another kid to me. Anyways, the atty asked for info about my pets. I replied that both cats are fixed, one is domestic short hair and the other is domestic long hair, which basically means ordinary mixed breed cats. He said that I had nothing to fear with them and to list them as being worth like $5. I told him I also had a boxer and he said that *might* be a problem. I then told him my brother got him for me, he has no papers of any kind, is not an acceptable color to register even if I had papers for him. He's mostly white but AKC does not recognize white or mostly white dogs so he is definitely not show material either. The atty then said I was fine with him as well.

The atty said basically any dog or cat that is fixed is worthless as far as the trustee's in my area. It doesn't even matter if they are registered because you can't breed them. So don't worry about losing your cat, it will be fine.

Thanks for your response. I retained an attorney the other week and to tell you the truth, when they were asking about household stuff, no mention of pets came up. They may have asked about livestock or something like that (or I could be making that up, everything is starting to run together). So I'll just assume that since he's fixed, we're good to go.

          Thanks again

I asked about my dog when we first met with the attorney. My dog is a full-blood English Springer Spaniel.

The attorney said that the trustee wouldn't want him.

I would die without my "baby!"

I would assume your basic household animal is safe, unless you own a farm of the sort and raise cattle and such, or own a race horse??? I've never heard any issues of animals of any type in a bankruptcy case. It is a comfort to know "our animal family members," are safe! I was able to add the amount of food and vet bills on my expenses, after all they are an expense to a certain extent.

considering the amount of pure bred animals, including Maine Coon Cats dumped in the local shelter on any given month how could they say it has monitary value? My attorney said nobody wants any pets, only cattle and racehorses as said. Dogs and cats are a dime a dozen, unfortunatly. Harsh reality. Even "breeding quality". My daughters friend just got an AKC registered, un-neutered 6 month old choc lab from the pound.

I was worried that our dog was going to get repo'd when we filed. He is a "designer breed" that we bought at the local petshop when we were greiving the passing of our yellow lab who was 13 years old. Anyways, I NEVER would've spent $1000 on a dog, but we were going through a rough time and when I held him I was instantly attached. (Little did I know I was pregnant at the time and probably a little over emo then too)

Anyways, when we filed we were so nervous the dog would get repo'd since we had financed him through the petstore, but our attorney said, no one wants a dog that is neutered that can't be used for breeding. Also, they wouldn't be able to repo the dog since dogs generally stay in the house and there would be no way for them to take him without our allowing it.

I'm sorry I went on a little tangent, Long Story Short, they aren't going to want your pet, no matter what you paid for him/her.

lol....I paid 49.95 for my black kitty Salem 8 years ago. Can you imagine the repo man showing up for him?? lol....sorry for some reason it makes me giggle.

to the OP, I think you're fine. I wouldn't worry. I wouldn't even mention it futher unless asked specifically.

NO ONE is taking my two mangy mutt cats that I rescued from the streets! No One! Do you hear me? NO ONE!

I wonder if creditors could actually take your beloved four legged friends, how many of us would go out of our way (read: get deeper in debt) to keep them..I'm sure I would.

I've never gotten any kind of purebreed but for some reason just ended up being fascinated by the Maine Coon. We have a male and he might get up to 25 lbs! (Holy crap!)

I guess I wanted to make sure that when people came over there was no mistaking we had a cat - you won't be able to miss this guy once he's fully grown (which can take up to 4 years, he's about 15 months old now and already 12 pounds and bigger than our other domestic cat we got for free 12 years ago). All our other pets have been freebie/rescue types and when we get a puppy sometime in the near future, I'm sure that will be a freebie/rescue/pound puppy kind of guy.

Here's a link to a picture of a full grown Maine coon if anyone is interested.

Megacoon Cattery is a world class, award winning cattery and breeder of Maine Coon kittens in the Southeast United States, located in North Carolina.

This is the cattery where we got Mammoth from (he's orange like this cat but no white in him).

That thing looks like it should weigh a lot more than 25#
We once had a cat that was roughly 30#
She wasn't huge, but noticably larger than most house cat.
Not an ounce of fat on her either. Most of it was muscle from spending the nights out in the back yard hunting things like squirrels, rabbits, and even a few opossums.
She was someone elses pet that was given to us.

I could never understand the need to spend big bucks for an animal.
There are tons that can be had cheap, or free.
Like the peek-a-pom (with papers) that was given to my wife last summer.

                            Awww they're cute!

Yeah, it's something we're not likely to do again (spend money like that for a pet). Except my husband wants a Great Pyrenees one day. What's with my family wanting huge pets?

Guess will have to just keep a look out for any rescued ones or at the shelter.

My 2 cats were given a value of $1 each on our paperwork. OUCH poor kitties!~

I agree that you would only have an issue if you were making lots of money off breeding or something. but even then, I think you'd have to have a mean trustee who'd want to take your family pet! Horses/livestock/stuff like that is the real issue with animals.
