Unexpected free PACER access at courthouse

Hi all, I have been lurking for a while reading everything I can because I am going to have to file Ch 7 pro se (long story). This site has been SO wonderful and uplifting -- what a nice change from so many forums!

So here's something that might help someone else: as part of gathering info for my pro se filing, I went down to the Federal Courthouse in Jacksonville, FL today to ask the bankruptcy clerk some questions. Not only were they incredibly kind and helpful, they pointed me to an anteroom just to the side where they have 7 or 8 PCs set up for **free** PACER access. You can do all the searching you like for free! Downside is that paper copies are $0.50 each, but my thought is that I would find some reference cases there to use as examples, and then come home and save them to my hard drive for $0.08 per page. There wasn't a soul in there, either: I don't know if it's because of Thanksgiving week or just because no one knows about it, but it was quiet, clean, and comfortable. I even had my mother drop me off so I didn't have to pay parking!

I was so scared to use PACER because I didn't want to rack up per page charges inadvertently, but here's my answer. I'll definitely be back there soon to do some heavy searches!

Maybe this will help someone else -- best wishes to all here!

You might see if you can plug in a little USB Thumb Drive and save the documents to take home.

Here at Target there's 32MB USB Drives on clearance for $3.50 each.
Discharged November 2008 100 days after filing no-asset Chapter 7. We intended to let a two-year-old vehicle go back to the bank and reaffirm an inexpensive ten-year-old SUV and our home mortgage. In the end we surrendered ALL of our vehicles and reaffirmed NOTHING. We'll "ride through" our mortgage after the court ruled it an undue hardship.
