However, an employer can legally state in the job requirements that you must show yourself to be "responsible" with finances or something similar.
The jobs most likely to not get by having a bk on your record are jobs that require a security clearance and jobs that require direct handling of money. It's the trust factor. The reasoning is that you've already shown once that you have difficulty handling money plus you could be tempted by bribes, embezzle, etc. if you get into money difficulties again.
Each case is going to be individual. Some employers won't care. Some will be prejudiced and not want to hire you no matter what the job is. Nothing ventured, nothing gained. Apply for any job you believe you are qualified to handle. Let them make the decision - don't count yourself out before you even apply.I am not a lawyer and this is not legal advice nor a statement of the law - only a lawyer can provide those.

I currently work for a bank and the story with a bank is:
You cannot be in an active bankruptcy. For example, if you had filed and completed bankruptcy and have received a discharge, the bank overlooks it. Banks cannot terminate employees who currently have filed bankruptcy. However, no bank will touch you while you are going through the bankruptcy process and if you are in a Chapter 13 for five years. There is no chance of being hired.sigpicPersevere: "To continue a course of action, in spite of difficulty, opposition or discouragement."
Chapter 13: Discharged 03/15/2010. Closed 05/19/2010::yahoo::yahoo::yahoo::yahoo::yahoo:

By now most employers run a credit report on you between the time you are interviewed and the time they make their final decision. If they don't like what they see on a credit report and therefore not hire you - all they have to say - "We have hired a person with more qualifications". That is the ONLY reason that they give. They can NOT say that you weren't hired because of lousy credit.
Now let's assume that you are already working at ABC Bank, and file. If you already have a "product" with ABC, like a credit card with a balance, you will unfortunately have to include it in your petition.....and then it is up to management on how to proceed. If you are a good employee and your boss likes you, ABC might look the other way when they get the notification that you, the employee filed bankruptcy on one of their credit cards.

My husband got a job with a credit card company / bank shortly after our discharge. There were some issues and we did have to talk to them about the bankruptcy. We took an initial rejection that seemed to be becuase of the bankruptcy and he talked to HR about it and eventually got the job.
He really likes the job and it is a great carreer move for him.Filed: 10/26/2006

Closed: 5/19/2008 - Asset case due to balance transfer and income tax refund
