No one knows about our BK and we intend to keep it that way. My wife's parents would have a cow if they found out.

My parents know - my mom was disapointed, dad was supportive. My dad mentioned that a few of his siblings have filed.
My older brother knows - he contemplated it a couple of years ago, he is supportive.
One of our friends knows - she filed a couple of years ago and babysat our kids while we went to our debtor education classes. She is very supportive.
My aunt knows - we owed her money and I eventually had to tell her why it was taking so long to get her the money. They keep giving us clothes for the kids.

No one else knows. Not his parents, no one at work, no one in his family. It is none of their buisness. My finances are my buisness.

WELL, personally, I wouldn't CARE if the WHOLE WORLD knew.......at my age it's "no biggey" to worry about!!!

Half the people I know struggle from week to week trying to rob Peter to pay Paul, just like I did... Many are doing without meds they need, just to pay a creditor.

Grandma and Grandpa's bills keep going UP, but their income doesn't so they do without things that they really need..... just to pay a bill they owe someone.

I'm from the old school "I believe in paying your bills", but I also believe that life SUCKS at times and leaves us in positions we can do nothing about and all the trying to make ends meet doesn't work.

Most people who file bankruptcy are not "worthless folks" who abuse credit cards and then cash in on bankruptcy to beat the creditor.

Most are hard working folks/with families who have run into hard times, job losses, sickness, accidents, etc that have turned their lifestyle upside down and they weren't prepared for that!! Bankruptucy was the only solution for them.....

Am I proud that I filed bankruptcy..... YES. I'm glad that I was smart enough to see the "light" (took me 4 years to get smart)and do what I needed to do financially to survive the future.

Do I think any less of myself? Yes, I did at first, but I don't now!! Now that its over, I truly realize that I did the right thing at the right time in my life.....

Do I care what other people think? NOPE, let them clean their closet out before they start on mine...........

          Minny

PS. At the present time in my subdivision of 28 homes - 11 have filed bankruptcy in the last 7 years that I KNOW OF. And these are people with incomes of $20K to $100K per year. Loss of jobs, sickness, divorce, medical problems are the major cause - not "overspending"!! All have children, most don't drive new cars, and only nobody owns luxury items such as boats etc.

How many of your neighbors have filed that your not aware of???

I've told a few close family members and friends. One of my close friends then shared with me how she had filed a few years ago.
I'm glad I told her because she was very helpful and made me feel better about the decision.

I'm most worried about my husband's family finding out. Especially my MIL. She reads the paper everyday from cover to cover so I know she will see it.

I hate that it will be in the paper because my DH actually works for them. The BK is only in my name though, so maybe others wont put two and two together.

If we would have had more of a savings before I got sick we probably wouldn't be in the mess.

Minny, You made some valid points. Most people who file BK didn't set out to do so on purpose. And, I too feel better now than I did in the beginning, and now only wish I would have done it sooner.

One of my favorites quotes is

At 18 you worry what everybody thinks about you.

At 40, you don't care what anyone thinks about you.

And at 65 you realize no one has been thinking about you.

                  I wasn't alone

When I filed bankruptcy I didn't really keep it a secret. I found out that there are quite a few people I know that have filed in the past and it has helped me out quite a bit.

Nobody really says anything bad to me. Most are supportive of my decision (after they find out about how hard we really tried to keep it all together)

i really dont want to tell anybody but i dont try to hide it. my dh on the other hand has not told anybody he knows not even his work or family. i told my two best friends, my mom, and sis. my dh got mad when i told my stepdaughter (his daughter). but i couldnt really keep it from her when she now lives with us and need to her to watch the kids so i can meet with the attorney.

my parents have done it twice (wonder where i got my money management skills from, huh?) and i have a couple of close friends who have filed in the past... so there isn't much judgement going on in my circle. i have had a few friends act concerned when i mention it (i haven't filed just yet) and ask me if i'm sure i can't just consolidate my debts or make payment arrangements. they think bankruptcy is so terrible and don't think i'm quite that far in the hole... but they have no idea how much debt i'm in! i usually explain to them that in cases like mine, bankruptcy is probably smarter than trying to figure a way to pay off everything... which if even possible, i'd probably still be doing 'til i'm a grandmother (i'm 29).

BK is now the NORM of modern society.. not in US, but everywhere in the world soon... just like inevitable global warming effects.. so is the inevitable BK/debt effects

Welcome you all to the new world financial chaos...

I have a feeling in the near future that many that now say "I'll never file BK" will be asking "where do I sign"...........

Our status of our economy is not helping matters at all these days.....

                            Printed in newspaper

Have any of you had your names published in the newspaper as our will be in our paper. For years I've never understood why they do it and now I'm about to be apart of it.

Bankruptcy has always been public information - it's nothing new. Our names were published in our local paper. If anyone saw them, no one has said anything to us.
