    First Meeting w/ Attorney....

We have our first meeting with an attorney this Wed (July 18th) We are in KS.
    What should we expect?
What do we need to take with us?
Generally speaking, w/ a no asset Chapter 7, how long does a case usually take from filing to discharge?

    Thanks

I would knock the CCCS class and obtain the certificate needed just before you file (most it would cost is $50 bucks, although I see some only paid $35 least amount I've see.

When I was going to the lawyer, I pretty much had everything ready to go, I did everything he suggested on his website:

    CCCS certificate
    Retaining fee
Tax transcripts from previous 4 years back (although they only needed 2 yrs)
    Bank statements
    6 months of paystubs (income)
A list of all my creditors, what I paid, what I owed (their monthly statements), their address

    Best of Luck, CMIYC

The CCCS Certificate required within 180 days before filing for Chapter 7.... Does this mean we have to wait 180 days after getting certificate to file CH 7, or just have it done sometime w/in 180 of filing?

I found info regarding this at the following link.

Is this legit or should I shop around a bit before diving in and doing the classes?

It means that the certificate is good for 180 days. You must file bankruptcy within 180 days of receiving the certificate.

No matter what you do, the pre-filing course you take MUST be approved by the US Trustee's office for your state. Here's the link to all the approved courses by state - http://www.usdoj.gov/ust/eo/bapcpa/ccde/cc_approved.htm

When you've settled on a lawyer, a few of them have their own approved pre-filing certificate courses you can do right in the office. Unless your filing is an emergency, I would wait and get recommendations for which agencies to use during your consultation visits.

Your original question asked what to take with you to lawyer consultation visits. Here's a good list - http://kennethbrock.blogspot.com/200...-attorney.html

I am not a lawyer and this is not legal advice nor a statement of the law - only a lawyer can provide those.

        06/01/06 - Filed Ch 13
        06/28/06 - 341 Meeting
        07/18/06 - Confirmation Hearing - not confirmed, 3 objections
10/05/06 - Hearing to resolve 2 trustee objections
01/24/07 - Judge dismisses mortgage company objection
        09/27/07 - Confirmed at last!
06/10/11 - Trustee confirms all payments made
        08/10/11 - DISCHARGED !

        10/02/11 - CASE CLOSED
Countdown: 60 months paid, 0 months to go

We did the same as catchme and went to the credit counseling class first. They put together a budget with us, listed all our debts, and went over things with us. They recomended bankruptcy and put it all in a nice little binder for us to take with us to the lawyers office.
When we showed up at the lawyers office we had two sheets of paper from the credit counselor one listing income and expenses and one listing debts.
That was all he really needed for an initial consult.
          Filed: 10/26/2006
          Discharged: 03/05/2007
Closed: 5/19/2008 - Asset case due to balance transfer and income tax refund
