Chase filed a Complaint

against me for $20K (I owe much more than that to other creditors). I got the impression that I could stall for a month or two but then a judgment would be ordered against me with a lien against my house. Given the amount of equity, if someone wanted to sell it fast at a reduced price to get their money, it would sell. I'm a nervous wreck - I have three kids in high school and would like to stay where I am for a couple of years at least.

Have you spoken with an attorney? Laws vary substantially between states. A judgment will generally needed to be followed by a lien. If your equity exceeds your exemption, then I would guess the creditor could force a sale of your home. Again, you should at least get a free initial consult with some BK attorneys and see what options you may have.
