Yeah on the off chance that something happens and I do wind up in a lot more debt again, I waited 10 years to file this time, so I could wait another seven to do it again if I needed to.

If your student loans are federally guaranteed, I believe you can get them forgiven completely outside of bk if you are declared permanently disabled. However, you didn't mention being classified permanently disabled, and if you do qualify it can take a couple of years for the process to happen.

For that small of an amount, I wouldn't file unless you know that you have permanent medical coverage that meets your needs and won't leave you with more bills than you can handle, and you are sure that you won't be back in the same position after the discharge.

Also, you can send certified mail return receipt requested letters to creditors/collectors requesting that they only correspond via mail. That may be an option to look at.

Best wishes on your health problems, and God Bless!

No, I'm not on disability and I still work and plan to continue working, so I won't be pursuing a discharge of my student loans. I really really really wish I had not used Alaska student loans the first time though, because they have strict limits on deferment and I am now in default because I used up all my deferment already. I have a federal loan too and have not had any problems with that one because I can always defer it when I can't pay it.
