    Chase scamming me

I just noticed that Chase deducted the minimum monthly payment from my bank account today. I NEVER authorized automatic payments. They also deducted it late AND charged me a late fee to boot. I called the 800 customer service number and they claim I set up automatic payments myself back in April of 06. THEY ARE LYING - I NEVER DID IT. Even if I did, WHY WOULD I SCHEDULE THEM TO BE AUTOMATICALLY LATE??? According to their records, I'm the one who set up automatic payments, even though I never did, I will never be able to prove a negative. They have the so-called proof by simply saying I did it. I have always paid them manually on the website, so if I had set up automatic payments as they now claim, why wasn't two payments deducted every month, my manual payment and then the automatic payment?

I know what you are saying, maybe at one time you hit the wrong button and hit the "automatic," payment instead of the "one time only," payment button - MAYBE !

But than I wouldn't be surprised if they just helped themselves.

Hope you are able to get it fixed. Why don't you change your checking account to a "check free," account where there is no monthly minimal charge but than there is no accruing interest either? I had an account with Chevy Chase and while I was in the Debt Mgmt Program I changed my account to a "student account," where they wouldn't charge me anymore monthly fees because I knew I was going to file I had to stop using the acct and kept the most minimal amt possible until I filed Bk.

I just now stopped the automatic payments on the Chase Website. And I see I was not charged a late fee, it was a $15 finance charge like I get every month. You must be right, I must have hit automatic somehow by accident, I can't believe they would deduct my checking account without authorization, that's just too blatanly illegal.

I'm getting more and more tense as time passes. It seems like I should have just given in to the fact I will have to file and realize there's nothing I can do about it now. I just can't fathom how I got $50K in debt. I can look around at my apartment, holes in the carpet, no cable TV, no stereo, peeling paint, four and five year old clothes and shoes. It seems like I should have something to show for $50K in debt.

Don't feel too bad. I blew over $80k and when I filed, my assets added up to $650.00 with generous estimates from my attorney too..

I was always afraid of something like that happening so when I started becoming late I went into all the cc websites I had been paying on and deleted all of my checking account info.

Also is your checking account also with Chase, if it is you might want to considering changing banks.

Just as a side note, I had something similar happen with the cable company a couple of years ago. I already had service with them and had recieved new boxes. She told me she needed a cc # for my file just in case I did'nt turn the boxes back in, sure no problem. Next time I went on thier website I noticed she had set me up for automatic payments on the cc! I changed it immediately!

                  Chase:

I used a convenience check with an APR of 1.9% for six months for the amount of the check. Just got the first statement (no other charges were used, no other balance, no late pays, not over limit, no deafults on anything, etc). It reads: "The effective annual percentage rate is 9.0%". I have no remorse, whatsoever for being in this forum...if you catch my drift?

the "effective" APR includes any fee associated with the account such as monthly maintenance fee, or any fees associated with the cash advance. So just because the APR on the amount you wrote the check for may be 0.9, the Effective APR would be more once you add all the other stuff in.

Far stretch to get 9% from a 1.9% offer, eh?

Obviously the bastards had one rate on the checks and attached memos, while having a hidden rate somewhere else in the myriad papers they keep sending.

My coworker and I were talking tonight. She said she is over 50k in debt and I could not believe it. Our conversation began with me saying "can you believe the average person is 8 or 9k in debt on credit cards", She said "I would take that in a minute, mine add up to 50k or more on credit cards". I told her she needs to file. But she said she would not be able to get anymore credit. She has nothing to show for it. She is also 55 years old. I asked her if it was medical expenses. She said no, just living expenses. I am starting to think everyone is at least 50k in debt. I had a friend who was over 100k. What is wrong with all of us????? I filed this past year and have vowed to never get there again.

That's what the lifestyle forum is for...figuring out what we can do to prevent future BK It's too bad that it's not more active.

This was EXACTLY how I felt being $55,000 in credit card debt 3 yrs ago before filing 13 in '04. We had 2 old cars, holes in the upholstery, flat filthy carpet in the family room (couldn't even afford to get it cleaned!) and original dirty, flat wall paint. The list goes on! We must have spent it all on food!! What the heck?

I can't even tell you how it feels to have just made my last plan payment, on my way to being discharged. Best decision I ever made.

I think the average person is alot further into debt and a lot more like "us" then most people realize. I have a friend who is a loan officer and I was slightly embarrased to have him look at my credit report about 2 years ago when I was trying to get a heloc. A couple of months later he told me that he and his wife were over $40,000 in cc debt, 30,000 in student loans, upside down on the cars, plus the mortgage etc.
