I used money I saved by not paying on the credit card bills anymore, my mom paid for part of it, I get travel reimbursement from my job and I used some of that, I cut out entertainment and dining out and my lawyer let me pay whatever I could whenever I could. It wasn't easy but it was a wise investment in peace of mind and a new financial beginning.

Lord! I'm floored with the legal fees being charged now.
I filed a few weeks before bk reform took affect and paid $600 for the lawyer plus, the $209 filing fee.
I had a few bucks in the bank because I'd quit paying my cc's 5 months before.

No more bricks & mortar sheister banks for me! My bank is open 24hrs, doesn't charge any fees, doesn't require my id and a pint of blood.....hehehe. I actually feel very liberated going to a cash only lifestyle.

I have a bank exactly like yours too...

I haven't filed yet, but hope to save up the $1800 for retaining legal counsel to begin a BK 13. If I don't pay anyone other than secured and estimated judgments, I think I can put away $300 per month. The remaining balance of approximately $1700 will be paid off in the 13 plan. This doesn;t count th e"hidden costs" of dealing with the creditor calls umpteen times a day in the next few months. Oh, well. Details.

We only had to pay our lawyer $1.00 plus filing fees and our $50.00 credit counseling fee to file. The rest of the $3200 fee is included in our Chapter 13 plan as a priority payment.

                  Paying for you BK

That is awesome, how were you able to do that! I'm sure that would be a great relief if more filers could use the Chapter plan to pay for their Bankruptcy, I guess it depends on your lawyer whether he wants to get paid up front, partial or just throw his whole fee into the plan! My lawyer wanted $2000 upfront and the remaining $1000 could be paid for through the plan, until I decided to convert than I didn't owe him another cent.

Stopped paying credit cards and other account I'd planned to file against, and after a couple months that was enough for attorney's down payment. Attorney wanted $1k to file, plus the credit counselling fee; remainder paid in bankruptcy.

Ch7 cost $1k. Paid the filing fees and $50 retainer up front (saved up from not paying cc bills for a couple months.) Lawyer got $50 a month until paid off. He was great to deal with! I guess the typical lawyer jokes don't apply to bk lawyers. They actually seem to be on your side
