    UK bankruptcy

Hi - I'm from England and have 18000 GB ps of debt which I cant possibly pay off due to the fact that I will be moving to the states to be with my soon to be husband and will be studying once I get to the states. I am concidering going bankrupt before I get to the states - so I cant start 'fresh' and not have nearly $40,000 worth of debt that I will NEVER be able to pay off. My question is that according to UK bankruptcy law I have to declare the fact that I'm bankrupt when applying for any bank account ect. Does anyone know if this still applies for me in the states? I'm aware that they do ask about bankruptcy but they are refering to US bankruptcy and not UK. Will my bankruptcy transfer to the states and will it kill my credit (of which I have none right now) over there? I have heard that credit is everything in the states and I dont want it to be bad. Some people say that it will follow me, others say that I will start with a clean sheet. I really need some advise. Thanks x

If you don't have a US social security number, then you don't have a US credit report... I'd say you're pretty safe.... except, of course you won't have any credit score at all in the US which will make it just as hard to get credit.

Good luck and welcome to the US!
