    Financial Management Class

Did anyone get any useful information from your financial management class? We are in this mess primarily because my husband and I haven't had a budget and haven't been very good about managing our money. At this point I'm kind of looking forward to the class in the hopes that we will learn something. We plan to take it later this month.
Did your class teach you anything?
What were some of the best / most useful / most interesting things you learned?

I am refering to the class you take after filing and before discharge.

Not a thing. Most of it is common sense stuff. If you did any sort of research before coming to Bankruptcy then you probably came across most of the info. My course had stuff about all kinds ins, budgets, interest rates and how personal bankinn works. Took me almost 2 hours to do my class.( includes a few breaks when baby woke up) I knew there were quizes after each section so I read it all so I didnt miss anything. I did my husbands also and did it in about 15 minutes since I just read all the information.

We took ours with CCCS of Atlanta and we did get some good information.

SAVE. Make that the first item on your list, before expenses. Not the last. Ideally, you should shoot for 10% of your Net, but if you can't do that, save something. Anything is better than nothing.

Set GOALS. Set 3 levels of Goals, write them down on a 3"x5" index card and carry the card with you in your wallet or check book. When you're tempted by an impulse buy, your Goals are right there at your fingertips, staring you in the face. Is making that purchase worth risking accomplishing your Goals.

CCCS suggested 3 levels of Goals:

A $500 Goal. Pick something you want to buy in the $500 and under price range.

      A $500-$2K Goal. Something that costs $500-$2K.

A $5K+ Goal. Something that costs in excess of $5000.

Short Term, Mid Range, and Long Term Goals to shoot for.

Goals are not fixed. They are flexible. What you want today may not be what you want a week, a month, or a year from now.

Look for Leaks in spending. Maybe you stop and have coffee and danish with the gang every morning on the way to work. It's "ONLY" $6. But that's $6/day times 5 days a week times 52 weeks a year. Suddenly $6/day turns into $1560/year. That could be your mid range Goal money right there.

I didn't learn anything new. It took about 1 1/2 hours to finish the video and there was absolutely nothing on there I didn't already know. It really was more basic common sense material to me.

You have to have the will to budget, the class will give you good tips and such, but in the end it is up to you!
