UPDATE...I called the city, no good, cant help...called the county, no good cant help...called the county health department, no good cant help..as suggested callled the sheriffs office, dont think we can help, sounds like a civil issue..one neighbor managed to track down the mortgage company, their reply, "well why dont you and the others go clean it up if it bothers you"...AAAARRRRRGGGGGGGGGGGG......
The house sold last week at sheriffs auction, the bank bought it back for $90,000. Turns out the mortgage had PMI, and according to local contractor I know that means the bank got its money back and will wither sit on it for as long as it wants, or contract with a local agent to list it, in which case that agent would clean up the yard, but not the entire house. My contractor buddy said he had walked through the house and said it was worse than before..
So I really dont know what if anything can be done, I have thought about a small claims court case against the mortgage comepany for the nuisance of the condition of the place...

wantout, I'm glad this property appears to be getting cleaned up.
To others who have this problem, the suggestion to contact your local elected representatives is a good one. There are probably laws on the books that require property owners to keep the property maintained. The key is to get somebody to enforce those laws. In my city, enough people complained to their city council members about the blight on all the foreclosed, bank-owned properties, that a couple of the city council members are leading an effort to hold the banks accountable for the conditions of the vacant properties they own.LadyInTheRed is in the black!

LadyInTheRed that is excellent advise. i know it was mentioned that the city or town was called...but even the dept. of sanitation or the environmental agency in your county...SOMEONE will do something.
the people next door to us now said that at one time our, now lovely pool, was once green full of bugs and smelling the neighborhood. she called the police, the town and finally the board of heath to get the owner to clean it up. also i know now our HOA president is after the banks ALL the time with properties the banks took back and do not maintain.8/4/2008 MAKE SURE AND VISIT Tobee's Blogs! http://www.bkforum.com/blog.php?32727-tobee43 and all are welcome to bk forum's Florida State Questions and Answers on BK http://www.bkforum.com/group.php?groupid=9

There should be city, town, or county zoning ordinances that covers things like that. The problem is getting the ordinances enforced. And the governmental agencies are cutting personnel too because of the economy.
I am delighted the the house in question is being cleaned up."To go bravely forward is to invite a miracle."
