Does a sheriff visit before a foreclosure sale?

Today I found a calling card from a sheriff on my gate, and I will be on pins and needles until I found out what it is about when I call back in the morning. Their voice mail said something about "civil division."

I've got other issues besides foreclosure, though a sheriff wouldn't be serving papers, woule he?

At any rate, would a sheriff normally visit the home for some reason a few days before the sale? (The sale was postponed this afternoon, however, but that was after the sheriff delivered his card).
