Had the same problem when I walked away from my house a year and a half ago. I kept getting bills from the city, but I just ignored them and I don't know where they got their money. The house was foreclosed on and sold at auction last May so I'm assuming the city got their money from somewhere. I haven't gotten any more bills from them.

We stopped worrying about it. We tried to keep it up for a while for the benefit of our neighbors that were trying to sell their house - they are a nice elderly couple. But there are 8 houses on our block in foreclosure so really what's the point?
