Vacant Home Grass Growing over 1 ft.

What happens if I have moved out of my former home and it's in foreclosure and I let the grass grow really long over the next five months?

will the city mow it and turn around and bill me??

I don't want anything to do with the house as we have moved into a rental..

My opinion would be that you are still responsible for the house while it is in your name. So it seems that you would be responsible for utilities, insurance, upkeep etc. As for the grass growing too tall, are there any city ordinances about that where you are at? If not then I guess the worst would be that your neighbors wont be happy. If you live in a community with an HOA then you might have to contend with them.

I shut off my electricity and unplugged the fridge before I left. I've switched ins companies as well.

I don't think you have to keep utilities on it. Insurance yes. Let the mortgage company light that place up.

Not sure if there are city ordinances - should I call city hall?

              thanks, techno

                Grass

I was cited for not cutting my grass, a neighbor complained, then the city hired a firm to cut it. The city then filed a lien against the house for the bill. My ch 7 was done in October, so I'm assuming it's going to be the banks problem now.

In our city, if they have to cut your grass, then the bill is added to your property taxes.
When if I am correct, end up being the banks problem anyway.
                  7/01/10 - filed!
                  11/20/10 - discharged and closed

I had a condo. So, I was just supposed to take of my yard that was visible. I gave up on it ages ago, because the damn landscapers blew the leaves into my yard! So, I never got a letter about it. And they can't say anything to me about anything with this BK.

Pour gasoline, shaking salts, sprinkling used oils, etc.. on grass to kill 'em ALL.... .. No finger prints required....

Don't worry about the grass. Let it grow. The city will make the bank pay it off when the foreclosure occurs, along with the back taxes and any other assessments.

DON'T sweat it. You walked away, so keep on walking........

Techno, ditto to what everyone else said, plus you should know that all taxes, leins, etc on the property are the sole problem of the seller, in this case the bank. So regardless of how the cost of any fees or liens would be applied, in general it all rolls up into that foreclosure sale. Of course, when I went through foreclosure, I was in an area where there was only two parts to the housing code: 1) pull your trailer onto the property, and 2) plug it in. So there was no question of being charged a fee for not mowing my lawn....
Nolo Press book on filing Chapter 7, there are others too. (I have no affiliation with Nolo Press; just a happy customer.) Best wishes to you!

good points! Just thought that the lawn probably wont even grow in the summer....it will turn to hay most likely.....

maybe a fire hazard instead of the grass being to long.
i am probably worrying over nothing.
