how do I know if I can use state or fed. excemptions

How do they figure if you can use state or fed exemptions. I am in Indiana if that matters.

I don't believe that Indiana allows you to use the Federal exemptions. If you have lived there for more than two years, you thus very likely can't, and must use state exemptions.

If it's really important to use Federal instead, it may be that you can if you move now to a state that allows them, though you may have to wait at least 90 days after moving before filing, if such a scheme would even work at all. And I don't know if it would annoy the trustee through looking a bit fishy.

According to legalconsumer.com Federal Exemptions are not available in Indiana.

Check here for verification of your states exemptions: http://www.legalconsumer.com/bankrup...anapolis%2C+IN
