    North Carolinas Homestead Exemption question

    North Carolina

    #2
The limit in NC is $18.5K unless you are over 65, plus some other conditions, then it's up to $37K. The $5K wildcard for unused exemptions still exists, so I'd say you'll probably be able to apply that to the adjoining lot if you meet the conditions for the higher exemption amount. The language states "any property" which has generally been interpreted to include things like cars, land, cash, etc.

Increase in Homestead Exemption - NC

Dub is absolutely correct - the exemptions did go up to $35,000 from 18,500 per debtor on December 1st. Depending upon the other debts then the "wild card" probably would be the best bet.

Increase in NC Homestead Exemption from $18,500 to $35,000

I'm just getting started with filing petitions in the Wilmington District -- does this new increase mean that a married couple could claim $70,000 on their residence in NC ?? ( $35K each )
