I'm getting letters from abroad from a few different creditors and one of them has recently started working through a US collection agency affiliated with Global Credit Solutions and ACA International. The amount demanded is the exact amount of the debt; there are no fees added onto it or anything. I know that a foreign debt can be domesticated, but I hear it's very costly and inconvenient. And so I was quite surprised when I received that letter in the mail from a US collection agency.
Does anyone know the process of debt domestication (there's a fancier term I think, but can't recall) and what I could reasonably expect? Are there instances, say in which the creditor is a foreign government, where domestication is not costly and time consuming and is more likely to be pursued for even smaller sums of money? I think the total amount of debt is around 10,000 dollars.
