Why would a collection company be upset if one were to hire a debt consolidation company? Sorry - but I'm new here and need to understand some things that I have no friggin clue about...

Don't bother with "debt consolidation" scams.
Take an honest look at your situation. If you can't honestly afford to pay off your debts, then get ready to file bankruptcy.
If bankruptcy is not for you, or if you need to wait for awhile before filing bk, then look into making yourself judgment proof/collection proof and then just waiting them out.
I have been successful in playing chicken with most of my creditors and waiting them out until the SOL expired on my accounts. It's not for everyone, but for some people it is the cheapest and easiest way to go.The world's simplest C & D Letter:
"I demand that you cease and desist from any communication with me."
Notice that I never actually mention or acknowledge the debt in my letter.
