Stupid- How can I actually owe taxes?

Ok, I do know how. On my paystubs it shows FICA- and there is about $30 taken out per pay period. So there I am thinking I was paying federal taxes. I have not earned a paycheck in years , so this is my first experience with taxes. All my creditors kept asking about my tax return. So, I thought well at $9/hr I should get something back considering how much they took out each paycheck. Well what a surprise. Because I am legally still married -I owe $1,000!!!!!!!, because my employer is a church and I was told to declare 0 and they were not taking out taxes. So, I guess my soon to be ex is going to look into what would happen if I were to file joint VS separate. He said he will take the blow this time. But I don't very well understand. How can a person make $7,989 gross in one year /take home $6,876 and ow $1,000 in taxes. No wonder we all have debt and CC summons! Where does it pay to work. yes, I know up my 0 to a 3 and they will take more out so I dont owe next year, but how on earth do you make a life on working 65 hours and getting a whopping $514 with no benefits/no holiday or sick pay and no guaranteed hours? Next time a debt collector calls I would be more than happoy to tell them -SHUT UP!! YOU TELL ME HOW TO SEND YOU $200 min payment with this kind of situation. Sorry everyone- it just seems wrong to me, I guess iam learning a lot this year!

I am sorry for what you are going through I know it is tough especially in these trying economic times. It is true, everybody owes taxes on any income they make. What you originally thought were federal income taxes taken out were actually social security.. which hopefully you will see the benefits of later on....

A lot of smaller companies do not take taxes out of employees paychecks and yes it is up to the employee to keep track of that income and either pay quarterly estimated taxes or all at once when filed.

What perplexes me is the employer actually gave you a W-2 and 'told' you to claim 0? wow....

I guess thats a lesson learned. Yes, they did. One time over Christmas they shorted me 12 hours too. Sometimes its like win the battle lose the war. On the up side though-CC companies really don't have a response when I say it like it is.
