find out your bank and bank account number? Letter from the bank advising me of bank levy had writ attached with my social security number hand-written on the letter. I thought banks couldn't give out that information.

The sheriff's department also can get your social by running your driver's license. Normally it is up to the creditor to find the bank accounts not the sheriff's office. Creditors usually find your bank account using the shotgun method. This is simply sending a copy of the judgment to every bank in the town in which you live. Chances are good one of them will have your account.

There is NO anonymity in bk or the Internet for sure
Unfortunately, you have only ONE name. It begins with xxx-xx-xxxx and is all that you are. If you Google your name, you are likely to see hundreds of your own name but not you. I have a unique name, and when I did a "vanity search" on my name, I was amazed at how many of "me" were there. Heck I'm also a brain surgeon I didn't realize about.
That being said, try to open a safe deposit box account. SS required. How 'bout a checking account? Purchase a car? Get any card? Food stamps? SS inquiry?
Sorry but you are not anonymous. Big Brother has been here for many years. I have a very old SS card that most of you do not have. Mine says below my name "not for identification purposes". LOLOL. Can anyone tell me they have a card like mine? I'll bet not.
Now, I have been known to tell true stories so I'll inflict one upon this post, and it is true: My ex-wife (whom I still love and respect) started to bounce checks for no reason. Went to pick up or find out why. "Account closed" So, she went to her bank. Four bank officers stood up, faces turned pale and she went to an officer. Asking why her account is closed and now she has a bunch of NSF checks outstanding with a hefty account balance. The answer was: "You are dead".
Well, obviously her spirit got her into the lobby and she went to the head person of the branch and asked, what do you mean I am dead? He said, your obit (real same name, real birthday, and real town) was in the real local paper. A coincidence? Of course. She then asked, did you call the funeral home to address this and see what SS number the cadaver has? Well no, was the answer. An assumption that cost them a customer.
The pres of the branch was not about to reverse her charges and pay the checks until she became quite a bit loud in the lobby and threatened to go to the paper about this little problem. They did do same and did write the customers a letter of explanation.
SOOOOO who are you? Jane Doe or, 666-12-3456?
'HubIf I knew it all, would I be here?? Hang in there = Retained attorney 8-06, Filed 12-28-07, Discharge 8-13-08, Finally CLOSED 11-3-09, 3-31-10 AP Dismissed, Informed by incompetent lawyer of CLOSED status, October 14, 2010.

It's generally the plaintiff's attorney's job to locate assets though the sheriff may do this also (on commission).
They just search any bank in your local area. That's why it's much better to bank somewhere far away.
Also anyone you might write a check to, is potentially a way to locate where you bank.
Plaintiff attorneys are not shy about using the "authority of the courts" to "subpoena" records from your local utility companies and they will usually comply since they have no overriding concern for your privacy.
In fact, one case I'm familiar with, the attorneys got Verizon to give up payment records for a customer, which led to credit card accounts, then they tried to find out how the credit cards were being paid, but ended up drawing a blank. These nasty little folks are persistent when they want to be.filed chapter 13..confirmed...converted to chapter 7...DISCHARGED!

So my question was: Can/do the banks give out your account number when served with a writ of execution - apparently they do. I thought they were not allowed to do so. Or has he bank just placed a levy on my funds without telling the sheriff the account number? The writ is dated 10/21 by the sheriff. The letter from the bank is dated 10/25 (received 10/30....) advising that a levy had been put on my account and advising me what the bank's fee ($125) was for all this. The ACTUAL date of the levy is 10/27. SO it took the bank 6 days to levy my account?
What is Chexsystems and who has access to that?
AngelinaCatHub - I have that same social security card (of course, it has my maiden name) - I'll check I think I even have one with my married name that indicates it can't be used for identification!

Chexsystem is a reporting and risk evaluation agency that banks use. Just like a Equifax, Experion and Trans Union. The information that they record on you is stuff like NSF checks, accounts you apply for, check orders through certain companies and basically any other information the banks want to exchange about you. You can Google them to find a wealth of information about them online. Mostly people complaining heavily that the company is unfair. Information stays on Chexsystems for five years unless removed by the reporting bank. You can request a copy of your Chexsystem report, like your credit report, once a year except in a few states like Georgia where we get two. Look into your CLUE report while you are at it.
My social security card also has that same line on it.

That's a law I'd love to see quoted. Especially for my state. Here's what the Social Security Administration says about it. I'm pretty sure you can't open a bank account without a social security number due to those money laundering laws.

Once the creditor gets a judgment, they can use the power of the court to get your account number, but they don't need your account number to drain your checking account. They just need to be lucky and hit the right bank (the bank you use) with a writ from the court, usually served by a sheriff, and the bank will cough up your money instantly to them. All the bank cares about is that the court order has your name and other identifying information on it, and they then freeze any assets you have on deposit with them and give them to the court.
Which is why you should never keep any money in a checking account or savings account once you get a judgment.
As for getting your social security number, any creditor usually already has that info, or can get it from your credit report, or from a debt collection database search just using your name and address. Many collection agencies have access to private investigator database searching software that gives them this info. The world's simplest C & D Letter:
"I demand that you cease and desist from any communication with me."
Notice that I never actually mention or acknowledge the debt in my letter.
