    The problem with settling one at 40% is that if the others won't deal, and you end up filing BK anyway, then you just p*ssed away the settlement money. Usually after a while you get a feel for it. It really only works if you have very few creditors and a good story.

    Not to mention the tax issue.
    filed chapter 13..confirmed...converted to chapter 7...DISCHARGED!

      We have 3 big ones, and a few small ones.

      and my husband was out of work. Had to move for a new job.

      Most of them have offered me 40% at one time or another.

      I guess it isn't for everyone.

        You're debt has been discharged and credit ruined. Why bother, your credit would still be bad. Park any monthly excess to accumulate a 3-6 months of cash in a out of state checking like Schwab and a Wal-Mart money card. When that is accomplished, apply the excess to a Roth IRA.
