very old debt on credit report

Any suggestions for getting an old debt (years past SOL per Fair Credit Reporting Act) off a credit report? Is it best to start with the creditor or the credit bureaus? Can action be taken against the creditor directly for failing to request that the account be deleted?

The SOL on the debt has nothing to do with the credit report. It can and will remain on your credit report for 7 years before it goes away.

Just because it's not collectable does not mean that it's not reportable.

I only ask because that is the date that should be used when determining the 7 years.

This debt is long past the SOL for both collections and reporting... it went into collections about 9 years ago and was settled shortly thereafter. I'm trying to assist someone in getting the negative info off of his credit report. The original creditor insists it's the credit bureau's mistake and the credit bureau says it has to receive a request to delete from the creditor. I'm trying to figure out who is actually responsible to remove it.

Contact/Dispute the debt with any collection agency that is reporting it. It is their job to contact the original debtor to verify.
