So get this....collection call at BIL and SIL's

Apparently, NCO (for American Express) tried to call my husband's brother (my BIL) yesterday.

I know that collectors lie...but when I called them back today (ya, I decided I have to suck it up in order to get them to stop calling dh's family), they said they had our phone number at XXX-XXXX (which is my BIL's), and that someone named *insert noisy SIL's name here* called back at such and such time yesterday to see what the call was regarding so she could pass the msg on.

I would bet money in this instance that they were telling the truth--I wouldn't put it past my SIL to try to find out what our business is so she could spread it around.

Anyway, actually for a collection phone call, they were pretty nice.

I've had lots of calls for my BIL in the past. I've called back to tell them to stop calling and tell them I don't know BIL or SIL, but never to ask questions. That's not nice.

They just moved and have only had the phone about a week, so they can't have been *too* bombarded with calls yet. And according to what BIL told dh, this was the first time they called. Or so he said. i think SIL was just being extremely noisy. They are DEF. the type that will announce this at a family gathering for the embarrassment factor.

I've gotten calls for several people who have similar names to some of my family members. In some cases I think the calls were actually for my family, but in many I think they just went through the phone book for anyone in the area with the same last name. The best ones are when they ask me for my social security number for "verification purposes" before they'll talk to me. That doesn't get very far at my house.

Apparently, SIL got another call. From the SAME stinkin' people I told that we didn't live there..and made sure they had all of our correct info. (That makes two calls now to BIL and SIL)

But anyway, instead of calling US to tell US, she called FIL and told HIM to pass the message on to us. Nice. She and BIL are bound and determined to make this ugly for us. Oh well, once the cat is out of the bag...the embarrassment will be gone I guess.

I'm sorry but it sounds like your SIL is a real piece of work.....

You could play nasty with NCO, and threaten them with suit for discussion of a debt with a third party. Tell them your SIL was given particulars that she couldn't have possibly known about except they got the information from NCO. Oh sure, all calls are recorded for quality assurance. But they probably won't look up that recording before they annotate your account and remove her number. There is a database they use to retrieve "possible relatives and contacts". You know that place on applications where they ask you for three references? Yeah. That goes into creating that database. Of course that is only part of it, but that is how it starts. Your references' references work their way in there too, eventually. When they got their new phone, that information was immediately updated.
