I received a letter today from a local law firm, for an AMEX account that I have. They are saying that they have been retained for collection in the matter. And what to do if I dispute the debt within 30 days etc....I plan on filing in a few months, I have already retained an attorney...how much time do I have before they file suit? It looks like a dozen other collection letter I received, saying nothing different. Just curious about the time frame of a suit!

Law Firm for AMEX

I received one from Zwicker and Ass. (AMEX). It said I had 30 days to dispute the validity of the debt.
My personal attorney said to dispute it towards the end of the 30 days with a certified letter even though the debt IS valid. More than likely it would take another 20-30 days for them to respond in writing. (If they did at all.)
With their response, they would then probably inform me that I had 30 days to make good on the debt or they would pursue legal action. (Again, if they did.) My attorney didn't want to guesstimate how quickly a court day could be set but said that 30 days would be unusually fast for my area and 3 to 6 months is normal.
I was told that I could also try to use a continuance to prolong it as well but I will probably file before that is needed. So, it looks like a minimum of 4 months and maybe as much as 9 months if they pursue this.
