Now i know why i don't answer these darn calls

so today i get a call from United Collection Bureau about an alledged debt owed on my wifes Citi Card. so i call this guy back, he goes through the motions to verify ID address etc. So then he asks why I have not paid the Citi card and do i admit i owe the debt. I say, have you mailed me a letter yet ? He says, yes, but citi mailed you many and you did not respond. I said i'll wait for your letter and respond accordingly. He says do you admit you owe the debt. i say, I dont know who you are but if you sent me a letter, I'll respond.

It goes on and on. he finally says are you refusing to pay this debt ?? i shut up and say nothing. he says i'll take that as a refusal, and hangs up on me.

What a jack-hole, he kept trying to trick me into admitting i owe him something. I'm getting my DV ready. From what i read these guys (UCB) are notorious for contacting neighbors.

It can get hard to keep your cool, but in the end, it probably works to your advantage. In terms of calling your friends/neighbors, I don't know if they will make those calls once they have contacted you.

Still, keep that DV and/or C&D handy.

I agree that they will probably not contact your neighbors. Collection agencies are only allowed to contact your relatives, friends and neighbors once to try to contact you. Once you have made contact, they no longer can contact the neighbors.
You can't take a picture of this. It's already gone. ~~Nate, Six Feet Under

Albacore, you did good. You with the wisdom of really fine women would know that he was taping you and wanting you to admit to owning some debt. I sure did enjoy your post. I would have played more, knowing what I know now.

I had a Sears Card agent on a Saturday offer me a WONDERFUL offer to settle. Would not even hurt my credit. I asked to wait till Tuesday so I could speak to my lawyer. OH NO, this is here and now. SOOOooo, I played him and had him fax me papers and fax me again as they didn't look right and then I did not answer the phone.

My lawyer (we were dumb as bricks then) told me I could have ruined my case if I dealt with them.

BTW Albacore, Mrs. has been looking over my shoulder as I pant over your Avatars. She just says harrumph. I just don't understand women who do not appreciate feminine beauty. 'Hub

UCB was collecting on a debt of mine before I filed BK. They would call around the clock non-stop, and it was always some man with a heavy foreign accent.

They are only allowed to say that it is a personal business matter, if they disclose anything else, they violated the FDCPA and you can nail them!

I was dealing with these guys in February of 2007. They were im possible to understand, I finally said, "look I need to speak with someone who has a firmer grip on the English language." I ended up settling on my Citi account for about 45% of the balance I owed. The will push, I have no idea if it is the last stop or if it would have ultimately ended up with another CA, but I happened to have the money so I settled.
