Hi there. im pretty sure ive posted what ive done for a living before but i wanted to do it again. i just wanted to share my story.
How ironic a debt collector ends up filing for BK. Well let me tell you even tho im a collector and knew a lot about the do's and donts i was still scared out of my gord about filing BK. i took 2 hard job losses and some pay cuts and had no choice but to take care of things the right way by filing BK.
Before i got into a bad financial situation i used to wonder why it seemed like the people would always say they weren't home or avoid talking to me at all costs. i always thought why are they so afraid? why not just answer the phone and talk to me? but guess what now i know why. being on the other end of the line isn't that easy. i barely took any of the calls from my collectors, and the reason for me is i honestly felt like a big loser about the whole situation and was upset enough about it that i really didn't feel like speaking about it to anyone else. The few that i did talk to ended up being very nice.
its not a bad job if you can overcome a lot of the nasty people you are going to deal with everyday. i overcame that fairly quick when i was young and got offered a job in the field.
When i started having my financial hardships and really struggling i was able to see things from both ends of the spectrum. really and truly able to understand what the people are saying to me and letting them know that hey we all fall on hard times you'll make it through this. when i get someone on the phone and they start telling me their financial situation i can honestly say hey i been there. and i don't dread the nasty calls as much as i used to because i just know how it can be. The best collectors are the ones that have been there before. so if you get someone on the phone treating you like crap and making you feel like crap about yourself then hang up on them, cause obviously they've never been thru rough times and wouldn't be acting like that.
we are not all bad. im really tired so i apologize for the choppiness of this post.
i started out collecting on people who purchased timeshares and couldn't keep up on their monthly payments. I did that for a very long time, it was an in house financing company so we couldn't do anything, if the person couldn't pay all we could really do is say they would keep getting the calls. interestingly it was one of the easiest things Ive ever collected on.
i worked on collecting state taxes for various different states, and that was rough. i thought for sure it would be easy cause if someone was going to pay anything they were late on it would probably be their taxes, plus if they coudnt pay there would be repercussions when it went back to the state. But surprise it wasn't that easy. i did well with it but there were a lot of people who just didn't care.
i collected on credit cards for a very short period of time and im glad about that because that had to be the worst! i barely got anyone to answer the phone and if they did they hung up.
i collected on people who owed diff types of fines, im talking speeding tix, to DUI, to assault, i had to call a lot of people who just recently got out of jail about fines they had to pay. Collecting on the really criminal stuff had to be the most interesting and i liked it. Most of the people were very nice and looking to get their lives straightened out, and wiling to make payment arrangements.
for the past year and a half Ive been collecting in the student loan industry and this has been my favorite. Most of the people care and want to get things straightened out so they can get back in school, and the other thing i really like about it, is that if someone cannot pay we can offer them other options such as deferments, forbearance's, all diff sorts of things. So i like that when i talk to someone and they say omg im so glad i finally called thank you so much for helping me. a lot of students are afraid to call because they don't even realize they have those options available to them.
one thing i would never ever collect on is medical bills, thats just not right and i would feel so bad...its not even fair.
i talk to all diff types of people all day long and you can tell whose telling the truth and whose not, the people who are very ill or have a very ill child i just let them control the convo and wish them the best of luck...its just something i cant do.
sometimes i get those day where all day long its people screaming at me, those days are hard on me sometimes.
i dont even know where i was going with this post, i think i just wanted to say if a collector gives you attitude hang up its not worth your time. i handle alot of calls myself where they tell me how rudely they were treated the last time they called our company and theres no need for that.
i also just posted it to let anyone know that if they want to PM me a question about a collection phone call im here to help. i know alot about collections, but i dont know everything but id be more than happy to help.
