Anyone starts beating on my doors and trying to open my garage, I'm going to believe that my life is in danger and that they are trying to break in. Being that I have a 6-year-old in my house that its my job to protect, I will have to bring out the artillery.

I believe that just discharging a large caliber weapon will make the attempted burglar leave very, very quickly and really not want to come back any time soon. It will probably speed up that 20 minute police response time, as well.

In most areas, branishing a weapon probably will get you arrested. There are only a few instances in which you can pull a gun out and in some States that is not even allowed.

When you call 911, just say "Home Invasion!" That generally gets the police's attention.

In CA at one time it was illegal for anyone repossessing a car or any other property to unlatch a gate, open a garage or even enter it.
I hope you filed charges against the agency that was sent to your home.
The police can arrest them for trespassing and their license to do their job can be endangered too.

Only if your financing is with the manufacturer. Leaving your property at a dealership that has nothing to do with the financing could get you storage charges.
          Just a hint.

What is the deal with turning in the plates? This is the first time I've heard of this.

Some States require you to turn in the license plate. Lookingforward posted on this post. Here's her post.

Repo Advice: Don't be dumb like me!

              --------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Our SUV got repossessed in January and auctioned off in February.
It got picked up on a Saturday. I called the Sheriff's office on the following Monday asking about the license plates and was told that they were routinely
turned in, not to worry about it, they were already removed.

Well, dumb me believed that and didn't think about it anymore.

Then I got a notice from the DMV stating there was a block on my husband's license because we dropped insurance and didn't turn in the plates.

I had to get a copy of the sheriff's deed, send that and all of the repo legal papers to the DMV. At this point the car has belonged to someone else for over a month. They reviewed it and said that it was still my fault and
I had to pay the fine to clear his license. The woman at the DMV said that
I should know better, and the law states I have ten days to access my vehicle even though it was locked up at a salvage yard.

So, ignorance of the law did not help me!

Don't forget to take the plates off of your car before the repo man leaves!!
Or exercise your rights to go and get them wherever your car is taken, or
pay the fine. Don't take someone else's word for it like dumb me did.

Where do the plates get turned in to? Do we just take them in to the DMV?

                Thanks for your help!

Yes, any DMV office or agent can take them.
And I sold a car many years ago and did not pull the plates.
About 6 weeks later the cops were banging at my door around 3 AM.
The car had not been registered and was just used in an armed robbery.
I went with the police to the address I had taken the car to to show the guy( I knew I could get there but had no idea what street it was) and they arrested him for the robbery.

That's just awful, but I could literally see it played out like I was watching a movie! These Repo peeps are ruthless! The guy that showed up to my house(mind you, five minutes before my party was to start)was covered in tatts and piercings. He drove a simple white truck with no name or letters anywhere. You'd never know he was a repo guy. Then, of course the lovely lady that called two days later who threatened to have me picked up and thrown in jail.....awwww the memories! so glad it's over, now onto my creditors meeting. I will be so glad when this whole chapter of our lives, is over!
