Collection agency called with docket #

One of the collection agencies calling me did the usual routine of saying they were from law firm "so-and-so," but this one also included they were calling in reference to a docket #. Does this mean anything? Is this another scare tactic?

Does the collection agency own the debt?

I'm not sure. I've kept every document sent to me, but haven't organized them by agencies.

If they do, then what happens?

If you recorded the docket number somewhere, you should be able to go to your local courts and do a search by the docket number. You should be able to do this on the internet but if you call the clerk at the court, she probably can check for you.

Sounds like scare tactics to me, I think you would have had some type of notice of their intent to sue. But maybe not. It is just the conspiracist in me that believes it is just one big lie perpetrated by the "law firm".

I checked my state data base and nothing came up. The creditor is located in another state.

I've had voicemail messages where the CA wanted to speak with me about a "case" and left the "case number." I returned the calls, requested written information be sent to me. I did not discuss anything else. They sent a dunning letter, I sent back a DV and C&D, and I never heard form them again.

Sounds like scare tactics to me. But, it is always a good idea to keep in contact with your local and state courts. Strange things can happen. Even stranger things can happen across state lines. While we always hope that everyone will play by the rules, this is not always the case. I call my local courthouse every Friday. Once every two weeks I call two other counties where I once resided; one is out-of-state. I know I may sound paranoid, but I sleep better at night. LOL

As someone once stated: Don't worry about the bullet with your name on it. Worry about the one that states "to whom it may concern."

If the collection agency is in another state, don't they have to file in your local district in your state?

Just as I suspected, they are just a bunch of liars.

I called NCO Financial Collections, and asked them for the address to send my dispute letter.

They went on to say, oh, "we can do that over the phone".

I said "no thanks", your letter clearly states it must be in writing.

I asked for their office mailing address, they said "we dont have one".

They said "just fax it to us".

I said "no, I prefer to mail it registered mail with a return receipt".

They finally gave me the mailing address, but only after going on and on about trying to get me to pay them $130 to bring the account current.

Buncha morons.

Nope, it's not a business debt. It's regular consumer credit card debit.

I'm just going to keep checking my state's court database every week and see if anything pops up!

Did you live in another county or State? If you did, it might be originating from there.

Do you live in a city that has a city by the same name in another state? I have come across a few cities that cover 2 counties in the same State. In that case, it might be filed in the other county.
