Not just BoA.
It is good to keep your checking and savings accounts at a separate institution from where you have your car loan, business loan, home loan etc as almost all such accounts allow such offsets.May 31st, 2007: Petition Filed by my lawyer

Now, on Friday I went in to cash a check drawn THEIR bank and because I don't bank there they have a $5 charge to cash a check.
I know I owe the money and I am looking for alternatives to BK but I have no compassion for them aster a cheap shot fee like that.Very fortunate in the grand scheme of things but have learned my lesson.

I know this doesn't add much in the way of factual information, but...
[soapbox]
Whenever I read a banking story these days -- whether it's the "credit crisis" that no one in banking seems to have any idea how such misfortune could befall them, or cross-collateralization/right of offset stories like the one above, or yet another creditor refusing to work with an absolutely willing debtor because secretly in some lofty private boardroom they're pretty confident that if they hold out long enough, the gov't will bail them out with a sizeable donation -- I swear, the entire f***ing banking industry today is nothing but legalized loan sharking. Literally.
Sorry to cuss, but... it's only a "bank" anymore, in the historically accepted sense, if you're rich and have large deposits to take elsewhere if they fail to meet your needs. If you're not rich, count on paying the vig.
Just because no one has a baseball bat to your knees doesn't mean it's not loan sharking.

Nolo Press book on filing Chapter 7, there are others too. (I have no affiliation with Nolo Press; just a happy customer.) Best wishes to you!
