Anyone spending over $25k on a car is a fool--regardless of whether you can "afford it" or not. Anything over $25k gets you little more than "status" and "brand envy". Of course, trucks and SUV's are more expensive than cars, so if you need a truck or SUV then obviously you would have to spend more than $25k if buying new.
Also, it is very important to understand that just because you can "afford" something today doesn't mean you will be able to afford it in a month or a year or two years. Job security is nonexistent, wages are going down not up, and living situations can change suddenly.
