Well..
Today, we wanted to make a deposit into our joint checking account at our local bank and the ATM didn't want to take the checks. After that, we wanted to make a small purchase at the local supermarket - $6 purchase denied with an "available balance" of more than $600.
So my mother grabbed the phone and called the bank. After a longer wait, we were told that there was a "hold" on the account but the lady on the phone had no detailed info and told us we should come into a branch tomorrow (fortunately, there is one open). So right now, I'm asking myself what could have happened. Since my mother has 5 judgments against her, I thought that we could be dealing with a garnishment/account freeze.
If so, what can we do? I'm not sure if the "Head of Household" applies to her although we live together in one household and she is providing our entire income. Problem is - I'm 33...
Would her BK-filing lift the hold/freeze or do we have to do something else in addition to that. For us, it really hurts that we can't get to that money but we might be able to pull off the BK-filing sometime next week. I'm really in no mood to fight a second legal battle about a potential garnishment - and God knows how long that would take to get access to our money. Not to mention that I have to deal with bounced checks and payments..
Any ideas?
Thanks in advance!
