My friend rents the basement apartment from a family and pays them one lump sum per month to cover rent, utilities, local phone and a portion of the cable bill. Just wondering what the attorney will want to see in terms of receipts. I'm assuming they will just have to show a receipt from the landlord that the agreed upon amount has been paid monthly?

If your friend doesn't have one, tell him/her to get some form of a lease agreement with the Landlord. The Lease can spell out the terms of their agreement about rent payments are for said space including X, Y, Z utilities.
Our attny wanted a copy of our lease on file in case he gets audited.
It would be a good CYA for your friend. And maybe a letter of reference stating that all payments have been paid on time as well.Filed Ch 7 - 09/06
