I hired my attorney today!! I have prayed long and hard about finding the right one. I was invited to diva service project and really didn't want to go. The guy I spent 4 hours roofing with turns out to be a highly regarded bk attorney.

Blessings! I want to thank each of you in here as well. I have been truly blessed by this community. I have gone from being alone in a hotel room with zero hope and bad thoughts to realizing this does not define me or my worth. I made some mistakes but I am getting better and moving forward.

Also, I'm 12 days past due on American Express and they are calling me 4-5 times a day for a $4,890 balance. Is that normal.

Yes it's normal for them to pester you umpteen times a day. Is it possible we forgot to tell you to get Google Voice??? It's not too late- go in and change your numbers NOW online...

Now that you have retained your lawyer,
When they call simply tell them you filed for BK and give them your attorneys name and number. Say thank you and hang up.

My understanding was that they can keep calling you til you actually have a case number?

As soon as the Lawyer files the paperwork, which he/she will more then likely file Electronically, they'll get the case number right away. When they call you and you give them your lawyers number he/she should tell them the case number and all calls should stop.

After the case is filed, it wont be long before the calls will stop. The Automatic stay will be in effect. But there is a time..
You attorney is there for you. So all calls you can forward right to them.

Congrats! Isn't it interesting how things can somehow just fall into place? Sounds like you were blessed to be at the right place at the right time to meet your attorney. My creditors called my home and cell every 4 hours. Crazy! It was like that until I filed. We filed on a Friday and by Monday all was quiet! Keep us posted.
