Did you go to a car dealership? They usually could find a way. Believe me my credikt is in toilet and I bought a car in preperation for a long 5 years. Try one of the kia dealerships 100,000 mile warranty plus 6yr 60,000 so i think i am safe. Maybe yiu should wait a little to file. The creditors will just keep sending you letters and harrassing phone calls at first takes them a while to actually do anything. Or your other choice would be just do it as is, especially if you feel more comfortable, however if you get income tax they sometimes take that too. This is why people plan. I was gonna do this 2 yrs ago my payment would have been 1600 a month, so I changed my mind. I was working 2 jobs. Now i am planning and researching, not that I do not want to pay, but I want to be able to live. I think this is what the forum is about. You have to feel it is right.

Just one note of caution regarding buying a car. Make sure the payment is not more than your current DMI. In contrast to the example of a $600 plan payment, let's say your plan payment without buying a car would be only $100 and covers trustee fees and attorney fees with the little remaining going to unsecured creditors. If you buy a car with a $300 payment, you would have to find another $200 in your budget, plus trustee and attorney fees, to cover the car payment.
ETA: Hmmm.... it just occurred to me that if you buy a car and the payment makes it impossible for you to fund a feasible plan, it could mean that the car purchase helps you qualify for a Chap 7. Another thing to consider.LadyInTheRed is in the black!
Filed Chap 13 April 2010. Discharged May 2015.
$143,000 in debt discharged for $36,500, including attorneys fees. Money well spent!

I know nothing about nothing , but if I could change anything, I would have bought a car before I filed (both mine are old as well). It would have made things much easier. That said, my UST filed a presumption of abuse because I was over median and my attorney tried to claim ownership costs (which he couldn't do in my case). However, I gave my lawyer evidence of how much I have spent on my cars to keep them running over the last two years ($3000) plus estimates for currently needed repairs; plus evidence for medical expenses (actual, like meds and needed); plus I got an estimate for needed dental work (3 crowns = $4200). My impression is that my attorney forwarded my emails to the UST as written -- I did not divide anything over time. Ultimately, I recently received the wonderful news that the UST is not going to dismiss/convert my case.
I think having a car payment would have prevented even the initial POA. Whatever you decide to do, get estimates for any expenses that are above what is on the means test and prepare to submit them. The UST put in their wording that I had 'reasonable and necessary expenses above what were represented on the means test' -- so it was worth doing! Good luck!
