        Hi brokentex,

From 2000 - 2004, I was a self employed (1099) computer consultant and made over $65,000 a year. The tax situation is a direct result of not paying quarterly "self employment" taxes - as I should have been.

            TatteredinTexas,
Well, now its time to "pay the piper" for not filing self-employment taxes for 3 years..........
DUH - You made $65,000 a year and couldn't and didn't pay your taxes........
What did you expect - a FREE RIDE!!!!
Now you can "do without something" to pay your taxes and now you get to pay all the penalties and interest for trying to avoid paying..........

            Sorry about your LUCK? NOPE..............

I'm single and they eat me alive with taxes, so don't cry to me................ PAY THE FREIGHT.............

                Bankruptcy and the IRS

Hell let`s do like the government does. Let`s get a printing press and make all the money we want. Should be fairly easy to pay them then.

Just as an aside. The national debt now equals $30,000.00 for each of us. Guess when the feds file bankruptcy we can all get a good laugh.

Seriously the irs will just stick it to you anyway they can. You are so upside down it is not funny.

Seems odd the whole purpose of bankruptcy is to give someone a fresh start and our own government wants to make you a slave.

Well they can just kiss my confederate ass.

                good luck texas

I passed a storefront recently that had a small sign in the window, "Lazy-ass bankrupt sleaze not welcome. Keep movin!" The owner told me he was losing his shirt because so many people bankrupted, yet he saw them driving new cars, etc.

Last year I heard a repo shop worker tell someone that "I pay my car notes on time, why don't YOU?" She was angry because the 'customer' was giving her a hard time. Or maybe she was having her own bad day?

Now we have bankrupt people chastising others because they didn't pay uncle sam on time. What a perfect world we live in!

I don't know - or care - which is worse, not paying a credit card or car note or tax bill. Does it really matter? We're all dealing with the dark side of our own circumstances here, and some of us have multiple 'personalities'. We're here for help & support, thank you.

                    TatteredinTexas, Down&Out, and PoorMe,

SORRY FOLKS - didnt' mean to SOUND so rough on you about the tax paying issue. OR TO SOUND like I don't care about the position you are in right now. Because I really do care......

Yes bankruptcy is a fresh start - unfortunately Uncle Sam does not look at it that way also..... and demands that the taxes be paid.

Some of you could have avoided this issue by paying the taxes as you went each year, but you chose not too (a bad decision). That's what self-employment taxes are for (I've paid them myself when I had my own business).

I personally think if you claim BK it should cover ALL DEBTS - including back taxes. Doesn't make any difference what CAUSED you to file, it should all be included to get you your "fresh start" in life...

Also, I feel that the govt DOES NOT give you a fair shake in trying to pay them back what you do owe. They have you by the throat and know it!!! The govt does not like payment plans but will as a last resort. Unfortunately, the payment is pretty high and your only option is to take out a loan, or work a parttime job to meet the requirements. I think that sucks also. And coming out of BK you can't get the loan you need....... Its a "catch 22" for anyone!!

Hindsight is 20/20 and I too am GUILTY of being too critical at times...... I spoke my mind without thinking of how it would sound to you!!! For this I apologize to each one of you!!! I do not know your circumstances in life and spoke out of turn regarding the issue.

Bankruptcy is hard enough to go thru - without the added problems of back taxes to pay..... and no way to get the money to do it and Uncle Sam won't work out something with you.....

Paying taxes is a "touchy issue" with all of us I think. Uncle Sam wants 37% of our paycheck and is trying to get 50% of it. You pay your taxes, then when you buy something you pay taxes all over again. Taxes on anything and everything!!!!!

Then come tax paying time and someone who sits and draws govt aid gets back $4-$5,000 a year and has never paid a dime in.......... It's just not right!!!! (We have people in my office that hold down govt jobs - make good money - pay little taxes - and then get back $4-5,000 a year............ THEY SURE DON'T PAY IT IN!!!!! If they paid it in and then got it back might be a different story....but they don't even pay it in.............

AND DON'T GET ME WRONG HERE.......... I'm not talking about people drawing SS or disability, the sick, the elderly, or children without parents...........

I'm also talking about the people that are too dam sorry to work for a living and hunt that "free ride" off the backs of everyone else busting their A$$ everyday at work...

I'm talking about people like my neice who will have one kid after another just to keep getting money and support from the system................ so she don't have to go to work and make a living for herself. Too lazy to even take care of herself!

IF I OFFENDED those of you that owe back taxes, I apologize for speaking before I thought... it was out of line!!

It's not a perfect world and neither are the people in it!!!

$65,000 seems like a lot. Especially if you're talking one person or a couple.

Think about 6 people living on that amount and it's a whole different ball game. Especially when 3 of the people are kids. Where the schools are constantly telling them they need this folder, or that class fee, etc., etc.

I sold my truck today so we could pay our taxes for last year. I read up on IRS liens and decided we didn't wanna go there.

I got real close to what I need. Since we just renewed the insurance, we'll get money back there. And I got a couple of helpful tips from the Dodge dealer here.

We started at the Dodge dealer. He made his best offer. But he told me to go to a lot down the street. They would pay more. He also said not to tell them about the extended warranty we have. We can cancel the extended warranty and cash out the difference.

So the other dealer offered significantly more, and I get to cash out the warranty to boot.

We got our money for the taxes. WooooHoooo!!!

VERY gracious apology, Minny. Thank You.

This is tough ground we tread, and you particularly have given much good and great advice. I think you're a terrific contributor here and we all appreciate you for sharing your experience and advice.

You must have paid some taxes for those years. If you earned $65,000 a year from 2000-2004, that equals $325,000 in income. If you only owe $21,000 in income taxes, that means you're only paying an income tax rate of about 6.5% when the actual income tax rate for that bracket is about 25%.
