For Chapter 7, my assumption is that only debts accrued up to the filing date are discharged. In other words, if after filing you accrue new debt, it is not discharged.
Is this correct?

Yes, I think so. One funny thing is that before discharge, I went to look for a place to rent with a private landlord and coincidentally, they all told me to wait until after discharge and come back. I wonder if that's an excuse to refuse. I asked them why and they said they didn't want me to include them in the bk while my bk is still active.
