    Credit check after discharge

I should get my discharge this week. How long after its closed should I wait to check my credit report?

I want to try and rebuild my credit so how long should I wait to try for a credit card (small limit)?

For checking credit reports, I'd wait about 60-90 days post discharge to give time for creditors to report properly.

I'd apply same rule of thumb for cc app's but have seen people here apply and get approved within 12 days of discharge, so judgement call there.

you can try some of the free credit score (not report) services like creditkarma.com to see where you stand. i actually got pre-approved card offers before my discharge from orchard and cap one. I am only applying to pre approved cards for now, don't want any dings on my report if they aren't giving me a card.

        Hi all,

Orchard is HSBC, a fairly predatory lender. Cap One also has a pretty negative rep although some people do fine with them.

Trick is to go over the terms with a fine tooth comb, the profit on these cards is usually in the fees they can charge. And given the interest rate, do not carry a balance!

Remember that they are not offering you cards b/c they care about you....it is b/c they can make $$ of you.

Everyone who files bankruptcy gets all sorts of offers from creditors and car lenders since your information is now public information and your name and address gets out there on all sorts of bankruptcy and bad credit mailing lists. Everyone will receive all sorts of offers that are "pre-approved", all sorts of car offers trying to get you into the dealerships (of course the offers do not list all the high interest or fees involved) and realize "pre-approved" means nothing - that is just a ploy to get one to think they will get the card once they send in their SS and other information to apply. If a card was actually "pre-approved" you would not have to send in your SS number and other information to apply to get approved. It's all a marketing ploy. There is no guarantee that if you apply to a preapproved offer that you will get accepted as the majority of folks who have posted in this forum over the years can state. If you apply to all these offers, you will have numerous hard inquiries on your credit reports that stay on for two years which really look bad on one's credit report after discharge. If you apply for a card and submit your SS#, you will get hard inquiries on your reports - read the fine print along with those "preapproved" offers. Your name is just on a mailing list, that's all or gleaned from credit reports for folks with bad credit or BK on their credit reports.
