Anyone had the trustee send an appraiser to appraise your personal assets? Are they fair in the value of your belongings, what do they look for, do they go through all your drawers and cabinets, do they tear your house apart? Very nervous about this, anyone that had an appraiser sent out please let me know your experince. Thanks.

I just recently had an appraisal done, but my attorney wanted it done due to the anticipated value of my car. Like your wife, I was terribly nervous about the whole thing, but it really was painless. He walked through my home, asked a few questions as to what appliances belonged to me ( I rent), and never poked around in any drawers or cabinets and to my knowledge never even opened a closet door. I sat in my living room the whole time he went through. The whole thing was over in 20 minutes and that included the inspection of my vehicle.

Thanks everyone for all your input and knowledge on this subject, I feel alot better now than I did when I first found about the appraiser comng. I'll report back when I know the date they will be here.

Well, appraiser came today, very nice polite girl. Went throught each room writing down contents, asked to see wifes jewerly and took a couple picture of my widescreen and dinning room table. That was it, gone in half an hour. Quick and painless. Said we should here something in about two weeks or less. Guess it's a waiting game now to see if the trustee wants anything. I'll keep it posted when I here.

Question for all you Floridians. Why aren't you jumping up and down about the Bankruptcy exemptions your state gives you. I haven't compared states but here in California they seem much more generous (and realistic). Florida seems really restrictive.

Florida is bad on exemptions because they allow an unlimited exemption when you homestead your house, no matter how much equity you have you can exempt it, but you only get $1k for personal property. If you don't claim homestead the you can get up to $4k for pesonal properity exemptiom.

Because we have an unlimited homestead exemption, that's why! Why do you think ALL the truly rich have property in Florida? It can never be taken. So, when you're rich, you sink $20M into your home (in cash), and then run up your credit. Then declare bankruptcy and... yup... keep your $20M home.
