Yeah, any time you need daycare, or a full time babysiter, you are going to be laying out some cash.
That is why we did things the way we did.
We couldn't afford it. And all our relatives work also, so we didn't have a family member able to do it to get any kind of discount.

Personally, I never try to judge anyone based solely on their income level.
There are such huge swings in costs from one area to another. And different costs associated with different profesions, that you just cannot make a blanket statement.
I work in a factory, and don't need nice cloths or stuff like that. People who work in an office require better apparel, and the costs associated with them. They can't wear $10 pairs of jeans to work.
I can also do most of my own auto and home repairs. Which saves huge amounts of money.
I also know that if I moved 30 miles east, or 60 miles west of where I live, my grocery costs would be much higher. And housing costs would double at least.

10 years ago, we had twice the income, half the inflation of today, and still had no money.
So, the last thing I am going to do is judge others income or expenses.

Been there, done that. I know people who make alot more and still living beyond their means.
Quite frankly this is a pretty judgmental post. We are a family who earn more than 100K but due to job losses and lawsuits we were forced to file bankruptcy. A lot of our debt is paying for our parents hospital bills because in our culture it's expected that we take care of our elders. When parents suffered heart attacks and strokes with very limited insurance coverage I took care of them because I had a great job and so did hubby.

I don't have fancy cars or a mcmansion. We bought at the height of the housing market. Was it smart? No, but we thought we were making the right decision especially since we had saved and put down 20%. We had $30K left over for emergencies and you know what? After you get laid off and don't work that money starts to dwindle. We struggled for 2 years and it has sucked.

I would never judge another person and how they spend their hard earned money. Sometimes bad things happen to good people who've always played by the rules.

i very much agree with that....we were WELL over 100k....one of us was 130k alone...(however, as indicated in my previous post my siblings are like 7.2 million a year or something sickening like that).

we never lived beyond our means either. but we worked our entire lives to get to where we were...between us 4 college degrees...and grad work...sometimes working 2 and 3 jobs while in school....etc etc.
