Living rent-free with parents, but possibly changing

Currently living with my parents so I have not been paying anything to them for rent. However, they have been getting behind on their mortgage payments and risk foreclosure so they were asking for me to help with the payments. I plan on giving them $500 a month. My question is, would I be able to make this considered as living and rent expense on Schedule J? Would there need to be a contract between me and my parents or can I just list it as an expense?

I had to move in with my parents. I was paying them $600 month room and board and didn't have any problems during my 341 meeting. I didn't have any contract or anything showing that I owed them monthly, just my word. I don't know how it is where you live, but they didn't ask for any proof.

How hard would it be to pick up a generic lease agreement, I would use that in the event they ask for proof.

I would list it as an expense and not worry about a contract. I don't think the trustee is expecting one. If you are below the median I wouldn't worry. I didn't pay any rent living with my parents and nobody said a word. Just awaiting discharge now. My 60 days was up since Monday!
