    Checking Accounts Disabled

Filed two weeks ago. Tonight, for the first time, I could not get logged on to either checking account. Obviously, the BK notices have made it to the banks. I read (here in this forum, if memory serves) that I should have use of the accounts to continue paying bills, etc.

Please don't tell me the trustee is going to take what little I had in the credit union checking account. On the "day of" filing, I was careful to have a checking account balance that was very close to what was reported on the Schedules. (And, btw, I am not defaulting on any debt to the credit union, and, in fact, even talked to them and told them I planned to file. The person I spoke to said filing would not effect my account, since I don't owe them anything.)

However, AFTER filing, I did deposit a small paycheck, and thought I could use that to pay bills.

How long will the accounts be locked up? Am I going to lose money? I could scream.

Yes, if you are defaulting on debt owed to a credit union, then I would expect them to freeze any accounts/funds you have with them. But I am not in that situation. I am sure I will have access to the accounts (and funds) again at some point, but wonder how long it will take? Or whether the banks have to have a letter from the Trustee stating that he/she has no interest before they will let me use them? Based on a conversation I had with someone at the bank months ago, I was left with the impression that the checking account would not be effected when I filed. I was told they would not shut it down, etc.

So I wasn't expecting the accounts to be disabled, even temporarily. Neither the credit union nor the other bank gave me any notice.

        Which bank was it?
Does a debit card for either account work in an ATM, to check balances for instance?
I would call customer service. Does it say your account was disabled on the web login screen or what? Internet banking sites are down for maintenance at least once a week.

If you already filed, they may be violating the automatic stay that was in place the day you filed. Talk to your lawyer, if you have one. Sometimes they will turn off the online access, but like others said, be sure you still have access.

If the CU isn't a creditor, then your online access shouldn't be affected.
Do you have any loan products with them like overdraft checking?
I would check again, and think about banking somewhere else.
In my experience credit unions have never delivered any benefits to me.

that shouldn't have happened. i had a couple of accounts at credit unions and they didn't freeze anything (though they may not have even known about it - they were not creditors and they are small enough that i don't think they check for bk themselves). just call customer service or walk into a branch. my guess is they will resolve it quickly.

Just call the banks and ask. I had my mortgage online access but couldn't pay them as I usually did. With one phone call it was back to normal. It might have happened "automatically" and just needs a few clicks from a human being to change it. GL!

THANK YOU TO Everyone. Had a rough night. Literally had $5 to my name and another paycheck, with no place to deposit it (or to pay bills). OR SO I THOUGHT. Called the bank this morning (they have limited Saturday hours) and they told me there was NO HOLD and that my funds were available to me. WTH? Then tried to log on again USING a different browser. Guess what!! I have access.

It was that stupid Firefox browser...I had updated some add-ons last night, and that may have caused 'blank' pages (all blank except for 'done' in lower left corner) to come up (instead of my account info). Since it did that with both accounts, I just assumed that I had been shut down (by the banks).

I swear, I was just not up to managing one more hurdle. So thank goodness it worked.

Carrying on now. Have a good weekend everyone.

P.S. -- Sorry for the false alarm.
