    home repair a necessary expense?

my house has a 1984 wood shake roof that needs replacing. it has some holes in the garage and hopefully nowhere else. is this possible to be placed in some way on a sched j expense? it's about 10k to replace it but i cant imagine how you could count that. everyone would be putting holes in their roofs.

you mean people would drill holes in their roof, then throw their money through the holes?

i don't know myself but many people on this forum have said this is usually an allowed expense. only if you intend to keep your house (obviously). the main goal though (i think) is to get the 10K out of your bank account before filing (assuming you can't exempt it). others will know whether you can include it in calculating the 6 month expenses.

also, don't forget if you put it on schedule j, that also means you actually fix the roof!

Future expenses cannot be included on Schedule J when you file. Otherwise as you said, all of us would be putting down all kinds of possible future expenses - house and car repairs, healthcare procedures....you name it. Anything to get disposable income down. If this could be done, no one would ever have to file Ch 13
