    car insurance rates

    hi everybody,

how do you find out what effect bk has on getting car insurance? i'd like to compare quotes for with bk and without bk, but everything i go, they ask for personal information rather than general criteria.

so i guess my question is, by what % does it rise due to bk and for how long? i filed almost a year ago, may '09, discharged aug'09

    thanx a bunch

I'm insured with State Farm and once I filed, my auto rates did not go up at all. It only increased a little when I added my teenager daughter to my policy.

Some states do not allow credit scores to be used for insurance rates. Check your state laws on the subject. California is one that does not allow them to do that. Good luck!

This has been discussed numerous times on here...if your state allows insurance credit profiling, your rates will probably rise after you file; if your state does not allow insurance credit profiling, your rates should not take a big jump. If they do and you are advised it is due to your BK, and, again, if your state does not allow insurance credit profiling, call your DOI (Department of Insurance) and report the matter.

Call your State DOI to see if your state allows the practice. What you find onnline may not be current.

maybe i wasn't being very clear: i don't have car insurance now. this would be the first time i own and insure a car. maybe it doesn't make a difference to the answer...

just checked... looks like in my state they are allowed to look at my credit if i am a new customer (though they cannot cancel or raise my rates if i were already a customer). oh, well.

I have AAA, and I found out that if I didn't have my husband listed as a driver, they could have cancelled my policy. I had to fight them when I wanted to use them for my home insurance. I had no claims (other than the accident a month out of my BK being discharged, no fault of my own), and had been a client of theirs for close to 15 years before the BK.

I don't understand this auto insurance rate jacking that apparently goes on due to credit rating. I'm with SF and I pay 6 mos in advance. Where does credit rating come into play in a pay as you go situation? Unless of course, it's just another excuse for a few more bucks.

Because most insurance companies figure that if you have a bad credit rating, you're more likely to file more claims or some such nonsense.

I want my insurance rates to be judged on my driving record, not my credit.

After my BK was discharged I actually switched insurance carriers. I was with my old insurance company for 8 years but had BK'd on them and felt bad about the situation. They also limited my online access, etc. SO, I went to Gecio and saved $200 a year! Couldn't have been better! I have online access, better rates and a fresh start with a new company.

Between Geico and Progressive, I've saved a ton of money versus the local Allstate agent. I imagine cutting out the middle man is why. Significantly cheaper and I've never filed a claim in over 20 years.
