This seems to be asking for a problem. It really doesn't matter whether it is religious oriented or not; we all have religous holidays, even the TT and this seems to invent a problem that doesn't need to exist. The TT could object to the expense and attempt to claw back those funds. You could find yourself owing the TT 4K in order to obtain a discharge.

No amount of rationalizing is going to affect this situation. It will be the TT job and responsibility to recover funds from expenditures like this, IMO.

Now have a good time on the hotel stay, cause it sounds like you are going no matter what.

This! But Ben, I hope you get lucky. That's a lot of money to pay back. Try to make arrangements early next year to have friends & family to help.
