    CRAP-Car Title ?

Going through all my gathered paperwork for my Monday meeting to file Ch. 7

Attorney asked for titles to all our vehicles. My husband's car is paid off so we have the original title with the 'lien cancelled' stamp on it.

My car isn't paid off yet and now I can't find anything in my paperwork that looks like a title. All I have is the bill of sale, odometer disclosure statement and copies of the loan paperwork.

On the bottom of the odometer disclosure statment it says 'white-title copy', 'yellow-buyers copy' (which is what I have) and 'pink-seller's copy'.

Do I not have what I need?????!!!!

CRAP CRAP CRAP!! I am a dummy for not checking sooner but I assumed I got all necessary paperwork from the dealer in 2005 and it all has been kept in my files all these years. I don't recall ever getting anything that looks like a copy of an actual title in the mail.

If the yellow copy is not your title, you should be able to go to the Bureau of Motor Vehicles and pay for a copy of your title. Good luck!

If you're still making loan payments you will not have the title. You only get that once the loan has been paid off.

Exactly...whoever you're making payments to has the title, because they are technically the owner until you pay it off. Ask your attorney what you should submit in this case. I didn't have to provide a title...my attorney asked for the front pages of my auto insurance policy, showing the lender as a loss-payee.

I was able to go down to the Auto Title Agency and get a copy of the title. It is called a 'MEMO TITLE' since the loan isn't paid off yet.

          WHEW!

          Thanks everyone!

This depends what state you live in. Michigan and many others give you the title with a lien on it, as the OP stated.

If your car is a lease, you may not have a title either.

Just things to keep in mind.

In Kentucky they actually send the title to the registered owner even if it has a lien on it!

Two cars we had in Ohio on car loans, one we got a copy of the title with the lien marked on it, the other just kept the title but we could still get a memo copy from the DMV. So it can vary even in the same state!

And some states don't title all cars, especially old ones, you just get a registration document.
