What Papers Do I Need To Keep After Discharge

I was Discharged back in November and I'm now wondering what papers I need to Keep.

It's obvious I need to keep the Discharge, and the 2 credit counseling papers, but what else do I need to keep?

Do I need to keep my paycheck stubs, bank statements?

Keep a complete copy of your petition. If you get a mortgage some point within the next ten years, it will be one of the documents that is requested. Also, if a discharged creditor tries to collect from you, you have the evidence you need to collect $$ from them for a violation of the discharge injunction. It doesn't hurt to just want to scan everything onto your hard drive.

If you want to keep all the documents related to your BK, just go to the PACER and download all of them. It would be easiest way to keep all electronic documents unless you have any scanning device at home.

Really? What about old credit card statements, closed bank accounts, etc? I've got probably 5 or 6 boxes of such things.

I'm planning on keeping everything associated with the filing (this includes the account statements that were provided to the trustee), all of my tax returns, loan papers for my mortgage and vehicle loan and that's about it.

Any credit card statements, bank statements, discharged loan papers etc are all going in the shredder. I view it as kind of a psychic purge if you will.

I'm trying to think of why I might need those old statements and can't really. Any warranties for major purchases have long since expired so proof of purchase is not a factor, and anyway I always keep those receipts in a separate file.

Well, I did. Every one of 'em. Mostly I remember the last one. The wild finish. A guy standing on a station platform in the rain with a comical look in his face because his insides have been kicked out. -Rick
