    Houston attorney RJ Atkinson?

...if anyone has done a Ch 7 with her, will you please Private Message me?

Obviously it's tricky to discuss an actual attorney on this public forum...her website says she has a flat fee of $700 (!!) for Chapter 7s. Seems too good to be true -- I've seen three attorneys so far and their prices ranged from $1750 to $2400.... So I'm very curious about her ...she seems to have 7 offices across Texas, which makes me wonder if you get to deal with her or a paralegal when you have questions.

Also...her website says that the "free consultation" is...UNLESS you actually do hire her, then you "will be charged for the initial consultation." HUH??
No one else had that provision...which makes me even more suspect of the $700 fee -- one could quickly get to $300 or more for that initial consult.

But again...any specific experience with her, please send me a PM?? I'm considering doing a "free" consult with her...but I don't like that fee on the back end!

    Many thanks.

Yes, we cannot discuss people by name on the public side. I am almost tempted to delete the name, but since you used initials, I will let it go for now. One of the other Mods may come in and X it out.

When it seems too good to be true, it probably is. You get what you pay for and this could even be a "form filler". Best be real careful, but as Mrs. C says, if wrong, names given could be a liability to the site. 'Hub
If I knew it all, would I be here?? Hang in there = Retained attorney 8-06, Filed 12-28-07, Discharge 8-13-08, Finally CLOSED 11-3-09, 3-31-10 AP Dismissed, Informed by incompetent lawyer of CLOSED status, October 14, 2010.

Please do send a PM if you can help nickifan - please do *NOT* post anything here in the open forums about this particular lawyer.

Frankly, nickifan, this law practice sounds like a bankruptcy mill to me. Bk is one time when going with the much lower bidder than the other bk lawyers in your area often turns out to be a mistake. The problem is that you can't correct the mistake very easily once your case is filed.

BK lawyers should not be chosen solely by the fee they charge to file an uncomplicated Ch 7. Do your research. Have at least 3-4 interviews with experienced bk lawyers in your area. Select the one who appears to be the most knowledgeable and who you feel will represent your interests best if your case takes an unexpected turn. Then and only then, look at what they charge as a retainer fee. My $0.02.
I am not a lawyer and this is not legal advice nor a statement of the law - only a lawyer can provide those.

Our atty charged us $700 plus the filing fee. We asked if there would be any other charges if something went awry and she said no. She's very good at what she does.

She's not a big firm, but has 2 offices, one near me, and one in a city close to the BK court.

It seems the bigger firms charge more.

This doesn't mean this atty your looking at isn't shady though. Ask lots of questions.

As I acknowledged, it's tricky...but how can I ask for PRIVATE info about someone if I can't name them? What would be better...listing an address for the law firm, which people could Google if they chose? That's asking a lot of someone to help me out. The chances are slim to begin with that in a national forum, people are in my city and have had experience with this attorney.

In the two months that I've been here, I have PM'd a few forum members who have noted that they are in TX to ask which city they're in and who they are using...but of course it's a huge state and only a few live where I do.

And I'm NOT going to decide based just on the cost. I'm just curious/concerned about the service and quality at that very low price (based on the three people I've consulted so far.)

But I sure don't want the forum to have any potential problems...so I'll go with whatever the mods decide. No PM replies yet, by the way.

P.S. I realized I DID ask here six weeks ago for PM replies for specific attorney recommendations in this city...received no private replies. Someone did ask that I PM him for a referral -- but after sending three PMs (and feeling like a stalker at that point) I received no referral.
